One of the most intriguing projects of the DePIN sector, @DIMO_Network is an open-source, user-owned mobility dApp built on @0xPolygon, empowering drivers to unlock greater value from their vehicles. Here’s a 🧵 thread on everything you need to know.

1/28 What is DIMO? DIMO (Digital Infrastructure for Moving Objects) is a user-governed IoT platform aimed at introducing the next generation of innovative mobility applications, services, and experiences for users.

2/28 The project desires to lead the future of mobility, initially focusing on cars with the goal of expanding to support other vehicles (e.g. scooters, motorcycles, boats, planes, etc.) and potentially even supporting non-vehicle machineries such as HVAC or security systems.

3/28 Vehicle owners use DIMO to earn token rewards for streaming their cars' vehicle data to the network and to access useful applications such as @vehiclegenius which translates data into easily digestible insights.

4/28 Developers and data consumers use the network to access a large body of verifiable vehicle data, enabling them to build innovative applications and services for vehicles.

5/28 Why is DIMO important? DIMO differs from comparable IoT platforms primarily by providing compatibility across OEMs (can work with devices from many different manufacturers), and being an open, user-owned, and user-governed network.

6/28 In contrast, traditional device manufacturers generally use in-house solutions that limit interoperability and innovation as only a handful of companies are granted access to build apps and services on these platforms.

7/28 DIMO is currently in the bootstrapping phase, crowdsourcing supply while also supporting demand growth. The network plans to focus on increasing vehicle supply and providing developer tooling that makes device data readily available to builders of apps and services.

8/28 Vehicle ID: Every vehicle connected to the DIMO platform has a Vehicle ID (an NFT that serves as the key to critical information related to a user’s vehicle such as ownership records and specific driving data).

9/28 DIMO Vehicle IDs contain:

  • Public Data
  • Private Data

image

10/28 Public Data: a vehicle’s make (e.g. Toyota), model, year, and where it was manufactured as well as the owner’s wallet address and those of role holders who have access to certain data

11/28 Private Data: all other data is seen only by the user and those they wish to grant specific access permissions to – this data includes vehicle telemetry data, VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), important documents, and more

12/28 Vehicle IDs are a core building block of the DIMO network and additional data can be added to them overtime, which could further increase the value of it as a digital asset.

13/28 Integration Methods: There are currently three ways users can connect to DIMO 1) @autopi_io hardware (a physical device used to collect vehicle data) 2) @Tesla direct connection (via Tesla API) 3) @mysmartcar (offers support for other software-connected vehicles)

14/28 AutoPi:

Connecting to DIMO via the AutoPi hardware offers the most reliable connection method as vehicle data is streamed directly from a user's car so there are no risks of data failures or delays.

15/28 Tesla Connection:

DIMO initiates data requests and then pulls that data once every few minutes

16/28 Smartcar:

The Smartcar integration enables DIMO to make data requests but the platform can pull data approximately once every four hours.

17/28 Overtime, DIMO intends to add more hardware options and direct OEM connectivity alternatives for users.

18/28 Token:

$DIMO is the native ERC-20 token of the DIMO network, issued to users and network contributors.

19/28 Drivers earn $DIMO by streaming data to the network. Everyone receives a portion of the weekly issuance (baseline issuance) and they have the potential to earn more if developers and data consumers pay for their contributed data or vehicle access (marketplace issuance).

20/28 $DIMO Token Utility: - Required for all transactions on the platform - Governance rights (voting power) - Aligns the incentives of ecosystem participants - Indicates who's part of the community

21/28 Tokenomics:

$DIMO token supply: 1,000,000,000 Breakdown of initial token allocations: - 38% Baseline Issuance - 25% Dao Treasury - 22% Team - 8% Capital Partners - 7% Airdrop 30% of tokens are allocated for the team and backers; 70% for the rest (users and treasury)

22/28 Use Cases: Connected DIMO vehicles can be leveraged to provide valuable data insights and support a wide range of applications and use cases across different industries.

23/28 Here are examples of use cases DIMO enables:

  • Fleet Management: manage fleets via GPS tracking, promote driver safety, improve operational efficiency
  • Vehicle Commerce: analyze data to inform insurance rates and loans, used car marketplaces based on verifiable data

24/28

  • Mobility Services: Peer-to-peer (P2P) car sharing, decentralized Uber
  • Smart city: traffic management assistance, data for autonomous vehicle training, efficient parking services, intelligent road infrastructure

25/28

  • Manufacturers: improve R&D performance, wear and tear analytics, a scoring system for supplier performance
  • Energy: planning and rollout of charging stations, charging station services (e.g. locator), optimizing energy usage

26/28

  • Maintenance: remote diagnostics/prognosis, DIY diagnostics, meeting regulatory requirements (state safety and emission tests), predictive equipment failures

27/28

DIMO strives to shape the future of mobility, enabling users to leverage their vehicle data and gain access to innovative applications and services that can provide them with tangible value.

28/28 Here are some accounts to follow to keep up with the DIMO network and ecosystem developments: @DIMO_Network, @alexsrawitz, @Ajchatham, @robmsolomon, @autopi_io, @mysmartcar, @vehiclegenius, @Lease_End_, @tenetenergy, @YourMechanic
